Introduction

Play Ball!

Riley Greene, of the Detroit Tigers, takes a mighty whack at a pitch from Grant Wolfram, of the Baltimore Orioles.

A Fly Ball to the Outfield

The batter hits a fly ball that rises over the outfield, and everyone holds their breath. Where is the ball going to land? If the answer is “in the field of play,” then the ball is almost certainly going to be caught, in which case the batter is going to be out. If the answer is “over the fence,” the batter is going to score. Most true fly balls are going to be either an out, or a home run… but of course, there are those balls that deviate from those norms.
